Step Down Beds and Supported Housing
Enabling earlier discharge from Hospital
Providing Community support
Transitioning out of an inpatient hospital setting is a complex and challenging process, with many complex considerations, including what support is needed for recovery, and the journey to regaining independence. In some cases, the length of stay on an acute ward is longer than it needs to be because there is nowhere else for people to go, and no support network in place.
Supported housing plays a crucial role in mental health recovery. National guidance stresses the importance of providing community-based treatment instead of more restrictive inpatient care. Supported housing should be part of rehabilitation pathways to help people with Serious Mental Illness to live independently and to enable recovery.
NHS CS and CS Place are currently developing a framework of step-down solutions to provide much-needed capacity and support outside of an acute hospital setting.
We want to make sure we get this right, and we’re working with our NHS, Housing and Local Authority stakeholders and partners to co-design effective solutions to deliver effective outcomes.
